Conan’s last show on NBC officially ended the late night drama. At the least, Conan’s last show brought an end to his drama on NBC, as his 20 year relationship with the network is now over. Now that The Tonight Show is back in Jay Leno’s hands, Conan O’Brien has seven months to ponder his next move, before he can go somewhere else in September. For Conan’s last show, he said goodbye to NBC by spending more money on their dime, bringing in more old friends, and even jamming to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Friday night’s Tonight Show brought an end to the seven-month long O’Brien era, before Leno takes it back on March 1. It wasn’t that long ago that The Tonight Show had a big farewell episode for Leno, or that O’Brien had a big farewell to Late Night. But for the third time in less than a year, NBC had a special late night goodbye party.

Conan’s last show had him looking back at seven months of highlights, listing new uses for his studio, and spending millions of NBC’s money on crazy bits. However, he had to confess that spending $65 million on a fossil and an original Picasso wasn’t real. But he may have spent $500,000 for his band to play “Lovely Rita” when Tom Hanks came on.
The final round of O’Brien’s NBC bashing also had Steve Carell performing an exit interview on their behalf. But by the end, the Conan last show focused more on the guests and the musical performances.
Neil Young – who Jimmy Fallon impersonated while doing “Pants On The Ground” just last week – performed “Long May You Run.’ Then to wrap it all up, Will Ferrell, who’s made a history of wacky bits on Conan’s shows, paid homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd by singing “Freebird” with his pregnant wife, and with O’Brien on guitar.
In between, O’Brien said goodbye to his fans and the network with a final speech. Despite sniping at NBC non stop for two weeks, he still thanked them for their years together. To his fans that showed him endless support, he could not thank them enough, but warned them to avoid cynicism.
We love you Conan “Coco” O’Brien!
